James Limes
My great-great grandfather, James Limes, served in the 48th Illinois. He was enlisted from Lousville, Clay County, Illinois. Two companies of the 48th were enlisted from Clay County. I believe Co's. B and L. James returned to Lousville folllowing the war and died there in 1878. His wife, Jane, filed for her widow's pension following James' death. In one of the documents submitted by a family member, it is written that James was wounded in the war, however, I have no further documentatin of that. Submitter: (only have old email that bounces now)"James Limes was an older brother to my great-great grandfather, Wesley Limes. James Limes' parents were Harmon and Mary McKee Limes who originated from Winchester Frederick County, VA and moved to Ohio about 1814. I can mail to you my list of Limes Civil War veterans, which are quite a few. I have James Limes records from the National Archives. Also, just to mention, James Limes son, Nathan Limes also served in the Civil War, the 143rd Regiment in Company D, from Illinois."

Charles & Christian Monroe
Greg Monroe writes:
My great-great grandfather (Charles D. Monroe) and his brother Christian C. Monroe served in the 48th Illinois Company B infantry during the Civil War. I have most of their records and such and wish to know if you have any additional information about them or the Unit. I do have several pictures of Charles when he was in Oklahoma, Arkansas and California. Christian was killed during the battle of Peach Tree Creek on July 24, 1864 and is buried in Georgia. {Hope to have the pictures posted soon}
