List of all Co A. 48th Illinois Infantry Soldiers

John Odom Brakebill

Gregory A. Grisham writes:

John Odom Brakebill

My ggg grandfather was John Odom Brakebill who was in Company A from September 1, 1861 to August, 1865. He was wounded at least twice, once in the face at either Shiloh or Dallas, GA and in the leg at the Battle of Atlanta. (His medical records show a wound to the face at Dallas, Ga but his pension file states that he was shot in the left cheek at the Battle of Shiloh.)

In his pension record S.F. Grieves, who states that he was in command of Company A during the Siege of Vicksburg, says that "John O. Brakebill was a brave, honorable and honest soldier one who never shirked or played off but was ever ready for duty except when wounded or too sick to carry his gun."

I have attached a photo of John Odom Brakebill and his wife, Malinda Ann Garrett, with two of their grandchildren in 1910. J.O. Brakebill ended up in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri and is buried there. Malinda Ann Garrett was a cousin to John Reed Garrett who also served in Company A. John Reed Garrett died just before the Battle of Shiloh. Her uncle, John Milton Garrett was also in the 48th.

Corporal Benjamin Franklin Mills

Corporal Benjamin Franklin Mills
Born: June 8, 1839, Middleburg, Henderson Co., Tennessee; son of James Mills (b. abt 1816) and Phama Johnson (b. abt 1817). He married Aug. 19, 1861 at Henderson Co., Tennessee to Dorcas Cathoren Rogers daughter of George W. Rogers and Nancy A. Powers. Eleven children were born to this union. Dorcas died May 3, 1920 and Ben remarried Nancy Johnson. B. F. Mills died May 3, 1920 at Beacon, Decatur Co., Tennessee. Ben and Dorcas are buried at Oak Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, Middleburg, Henderson Co., Tennessee.
B. F. Mills joined the 48th on March 25, 1862, re-enlisted March 25th, 1864, and mustered out at Little Rock as a Corporeal on August 15, 1865. His enlistment occurred about two weeks before Shiloh, which was only about 30 miles from his home, (quite a decision as most people supported the south in that area of Tennessee.). His great great grandson has his pension records, and some affidavits of others who were in his outfit, including mention of the of officers, etc. (The gr-gr-grandson: Charles T. Nichols). His photograph (right) was provided by Joan J. Maddax, 2830 Indiana Avenue, Pensacola, Florida 32526; her husband is a descendant of B. F. Mills.
